Since I am about to get new heads for my kicks, how do you recommend micing them? Should I buy a resonant head that has the cutouts for mics or not?

Definitely get a head with a cutout in it, the Evans EQ3 resonant is perfect. As for how to mic it, that'll depend on what resonant head you have, if and what kind of beater patch you use, what kind of beaters you have, what kind of mic you use, etc.

What's so good about the EQ3 that makes you fond of it?

when I engineer drums, especially when I want a great punchy attack, like in most extreme metal, I take the resonant head completely off and shove the mic anywhere from 1 inch to 5 inches away from the beater head inside the drum. YOu can offset it or have it directly in the middle for diffferent sounds also.

My band just recorded the demo, we ripped off the front head and used 1. Some awesome 6" speaker that gave me shit loads of low end 2. an SM57 (lovely) 3. and of course the miniature but rockin Shure Beta 98, gave me and awesome kick sound. that was for the kick drum only
edit : oh yea superkick 2 batter on Pearl SRX

I also just recorded a demo. I took off the resonant head and used an AKG D112. I placed it on the edge of the drum (inside) and in the direction of the beaters. The front head was tuned very low. This all gave a good sound.

The AKG D112 is an amazing kick mic, I once stuck it inside a crap kick drum, ran it through a cheap mixer and into a 4 track recorder. I was blown away by the results.

When I record drummers in my studio that don't trigger their kicks I usually go with the Audix D6 Sub Impulse Kick Mic , it goes for the exact same price as the AKG D112, but in my opinion has a lot more punch and attack while still maintaing a nice low end thump. Also the EV RE20 is awesome on kicks too, but you will be hard pressed to get one under $400. But for my band...I always go to my old faithful Alesis DM5 and don't have to worry about microphones haha
