I currently use clear G1s on the bottom and Coated G2's on the top and im wondering, why on most black metal cds do the toms sound deeper? Are they using a differant type of head?

this was mentioned between Hellhammer and i in thread can be found in extreme drummers the 'black metal' deep sound comes often out of not so much different heads (like punk many black metallers could not afford so much expensive gear- the level of detail and top line eequipment, of which one talks of so much on emd is ridiculous) > but instead the tom heads would often be very loose on top, tighter on the bottom for clarity but deepth. also often quite a lot of reverb and delay effect used combined with often heavy-handed playing (no old black metal was ever very fast in my opinion- one could play louder)

My toms are 10, 12, and a 14.
So I just need to tune them differantly correct?

clear tom heads will have more of that monster fill sound. coated have a little less sustain and more of a fat, wet attack. I use coated g2s and clear g1s, but am going to switch to clear g2s or clear emperors.

My toms are 10, 12, and a 14. So I just need to tune them differantly correct? same sizes i have what i did was went to local drumshop and got some dampening rings that go around edge of toms and snare then i copied Nick Barker from i saw on my Misanthropoy dvd, duct tape a square right on the drum head and i like my sound now you have to dick around with it a bit but now i'm satisfied I also have som Duct tape on bottom heads .

I just spent 70 on getting these Evans coated G2's for all my toms (just used my exisiting Clear G1's for bottom) Is this bad? or not? I didnt know if clear G1's for bottom were good? would coated G2's be better?
So all I have to do is get the Dampening rings? and then duct tape a square to the top and bottom? So hitting on the duct tape spot produces the deep sound?

duct tape is really about dampening though not the depth of sound - it is meant to lessen overtonen the misanthropy dvd - all that stuff is ring'd and duct tape'd because he is triggering -> he has to achieve as dampened a head as possible on each drum for as close as possible to 100% trigger accuracy his bass drums will have good batter heads with heavy thick padding therein, and the padding will sit itself right against the inside of the batter head (like internal dampeneder) - the snare has a ring and lots of duct tape because as he probably uses it more than toms, he requires it for ultimate blast/rolling accuracy (right he is, too - his toms a similiarly dampened (though they look at little bit less dampened than the snare, cannot remember precise) i would say there is little to no sound-related reason he does that for the LIVE performances on the dvd - he wants precise triggering and plenty of attack (most of the sound will be his beautiful TD10 module) if however copying what he did has made a nice kit sound for you, then that is of course a good ->im just sure it was trigger-related originally

Well as you can tell I am new to drums, I have no problem playing, just tuning and getting that certain sound. Im mostly a guitar player.
So the tuning thing is my best bet for that sound?

for the heads on bottom i doent really think it should really matter that much 4 me i never really bother paying to buy botom heads what i'll do is take one from top and put on bottom maybe. F.Y.I. if u do what i did with duct tape and shit u dont hit tape you make a rectangle out of 4 peices of tape and make a frame around top drm head botom no square just peices of tape in certain places to even out to point . and like whoever said about not making it deeper true it takes out over tone and some high pitch i like the sound of it if you do it right like i said it takes a bit to get it how u want it trial and error. when i first started drumming everything was trial and error i had to teach myself pretty much everything and thats how u figure shit out trial and error.

So you can get that deep sound doing by what you did?
no one has really told me a straight answer?
Does it have to do with tuning then??
